This is an advanced scouting unit, wonderful for subduing any later animals. Compared to the unit it replaces, it cannot enter [[FfH Peak (Terrain Feature)|Peak]]s, and gains a defensive bonus in [[FfH Jungle (Terrain Feature)|Jungle]].

The top fighter of the Recon line. A Beastmaster combines his own strength with those of the animals that accompany him (and a bizarre crotch biting weasel).  He also converts defeated animals.  A Grove is required to train a Beastmaster, and a civilization can only have 3 at once.

Rumoured to be the bastard offspring of Elves and Men, the semi-autonomous Rangers are beyond doubt the best scouts available, if you can tempt a few to join your cause. Almost magically in tune with nature, Rangers can bend the wildest of beasts to their will and fear neither lofty peaks nor frozen wastes.

Rangers can move through impassable terrain, carry hawks, and carry on a Scout's increased movement rate.  They are also the first unit to receive the Animal Handling promotion, allowing them to convert defeated animal units.  These units are particularly useful because they can travel in Rival territory.  They require a Hunting Lodge to train and can be upgraded to a Druid or a Beastmaster.
